Imagine one of the busiest intersections in the world, where thousands of people work their way through a maze of tourists, people trying to sell crap to tourists, taxis, tour buses, blinding billboards, chain restaurants and stores, and costumed Doras, Elmos, and Minnie Mouses. Languages from around the world, the clicking of cameras, and the honking of horns make up the symphony of what can only be the sound track to NYC’s Times Square. It is hustle and bustle at its finest, and not where you’d think that a moment of zen could be experienced.
Well, this past Saturday, I was able to turn the volume down on this location, and find peace right, smack dab, in the middle of the madness that is Times Square. I attended Solstice in Times Square, a wonderful yoga event put on by Athleta. Each year on the Summer solstice, hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gather between Broadway and 7th Avenue ready to work through a series of postures and deep breathing. On Saturday, it was the absolute perfect day for outdoor yoga – mid 70 degrees, with a nice, light breeze. The line was long as people awaited receiving their free yoga mat, gift bag, and entrance into the reserved space. Upon entering, everyone lined up their yoga mats, took pictures, and prepared for their free Slow Flow Vinyasa session in the middle of the world’s most famous crossroads. After an introduction, and a demonstration of sheer yogic perfection, everyone rose to their feet, outreaching their arms to the sun, giving energy to their surroundings, while accepting the energy of the universe, becoming one. The class was relaxing, and accepting of all skill levels.
After we all reached a place of tranquility, we walked over to another section of Times Square that was the home of the Yoga Village. With free samples of healthy bars, natural deodorants, and delicious Keurig drinks, it was a nice treat for after a bit of yoga.
It was a lovely experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone for next year’s summer solstice. Namaste!
